congrats on the DD! its always fun making bases etc and seeing others use them.
prepare yourself for the hateful comments of the idiots who like to express how much they think using bases are wrong.
as i said to someone else, not every artist is a professional, some people are just hobbiests and want to have fun, not stress about competing with everyone else and obsessing over getting better.

Really did not deserve a DD, you should not be encouraging artists to use bases like this.

I'm totally against using bases, but this is nifty if you want pose reference or just simple body reference.

I do agree that artists should not be encouraged to use templates. But MissPinks has a point: There are plenty of people who are leisure artists and don't care to do it professionally. In lifetime filled with other schedules, ambitions, responsibilities, etc. Creating interesting ideas while having underdeveloped skill becomes difficult.

I don't think we have the right to tell people what to draw or how to unless our skills are being used for monetary gain. In the event that an artist uses templates like these professionally, the artist risks copyright infringement as well as their careers.

Its becoming a problem on DeviantART (well a long problem actually) where almost half the content is tracers or people who uses bases or do copies. Having this as a DD only encourages it, the only way i see this being used positively is by those that already draw, since it can be used as a good study of correcting your proportion skeleton thing (cant remember the name of it).

Not sure if tracing is a problem so long is that it's just deviantart. People that are passionate about art will go out of their way to improve the best of their potential.

I think you kind of limit yourself if you believe so. You can get all sorts of character designs by using a template. Those designs can inspire other designs from other artists, so on and so forth.

If templates like these help people with good ideas but minimal skill, I'd encourage them to exercise their creativity.

The problem is, in most cases, the type of people who do use bases are the ones that lack creativity...

Not sure how that is a problem at all.... But, on the contrary. That just means they lack the skill and/or motivation to do so. There are plenty of good artists with barely any imagination compared to people with brilliant ideas and no artistic skill.

Well thats overly simplistic. Haven't you seen good artists that are overly dependent on references? Or have you seen a good artist so overly stressed about their progress they don't get anywhere?

Fundamental skill and creativity go hand in hand, but you can easily have one without the other.

it's okay if you want to design your own characters by slapping on some features on the base if you're too lazy about drawing your own figure. it's not okay if you continue this debauchery and post it online without having to draw your own art.

creativity should be encouraged, but done in a right way.

Actually, if they're paying you, then that can cause lots of legal issues. Its alright for background characters, free pictures or learning, but professional work it falls under some legal issues.

You missed the whole point of that. It was an extension to another post. I said something along the lines of "Creativity is yours to have, not yours to control."

"creativity should be encouraged, but done in a right way"

That's a very contradictory statement. Not to mention the right outlet is purely subjective. A good portion of creativity comes from adversity. For example: Van Gogh only sold one painting and that was to his brother and even at that time he wasn't considered an artist. But his name lives on. Similar stories can be described to other artists such as Jackson Polluck or other modern artists. Hell similar statements can be said about dub step.

I honestly dislike that logic, because there is no right way to express creativity. Trying to have a right way of doing so is stressful. Not sure if you noticed but stress affects work and more importantly creativity.

Creativity is yours to have, not yours to control.

your argument makes no sense. creativity from adversity?
okay sure, if i were poor, i can sell drugs and obtain money. creative, but not good. sure i have money just from that but there are other, better ways to get money.
cheating on a test? i can cheat on a test using creative methods, okay, but is that right?

this is what i meant about my former statement.

back to the subject of bases. it's the way that they're used that it's wrong - people use it to make their own "art" when it can be used for better purposes like designing.
if you hadn't seen so on dA, then by all means, do so. creative? more like taking other people's art and using it as their own.

When I say creativity through adversity I mean amazing ideas are often thought to be the most controversial. Other than the artists I named, I can name Tesla as an example. At the time people didn't want to consider their ideas as brilliance, yet their names go down in history. Someone might have a brilliant fashion idea to introduce to the world, but laking in the ability to draw. Would you rather give an amazing idea a chance or stop it dead in it's tracks? Even the founder of Honda spoke the quote "An idea means nothing unless you act on it".

Once again subjective. For all you know the creative method on cheating on a test could lead to techniques that spies could use =P. It's a stretch, but that's the point to imagination, every idea has potential.

Even in an artistic sense. Every person has worlds living in their imagination. So what is wrong with introducing others to it. Sure if they didn't credit the artist or started profiting off of it without notifying the artist, that is crappy. But if that's not the issue, you are dismissing a potentially good idea before it comes to existence. I've seen many an underrated art work that make me think "Wow, I wish I thought of that".

To be honest with you, I learned not to judge other peoples approaches because whenever I tried too hard to improve, I stopped being an artist. In a way the approach I thought was best became the worst because I crippled myself with expectations. People that struggle through artworks stop loving and appreciating their ideas. Sure there are professional artists, but they trained their skills enough not to feel too much pressure even with a complicated work... But that's why they are professionals. They use their creativity for a living. That's something amateurs don't generally do.

that's a pretty rude thing to say.
Not every artist is a professional, some people are just hobbiests and want to have fun, not stress about competing with everyone else and obsessing over getting better.
There's nothing different between using bases and doll maker games etc for fun except for the fact that theres a little more creativity involved in bases.

Even hobbyists have got to have some kind of dignity. You can enjoy drawing casually without having to use bases or tracing.

ok so let me put it this way:
someone who plays with an instrument for fun is "lying" because they use sheet music? actually anyone who starts off does, are they lying?
someone who learns to write by tracing characters on a page is lying?
in pretty much all aspect of our lives we copy to learn, trace, or add our own.
i started by drawing yugioh characters and tracing pokemon, and my art is a shit tonne more skilled and advanced now than anyone who is arguing with me so i dont really care what you all think. :meow:

I never said that tracing or anything of the like was lying. I'm not calling anyone a liar. I don't even know where you got that from.

Learning to play instruments for fun is different. Music was intended to be read from a sheet.
Peoples' art was not intended to be traced. Da Vinci didn't want people tracing over the Mona Lisa, I'm sure. Unless permission is given, it's unfair to trace. It's just a rule.
Colored over bases just plain don't look good in my opinion. I rarely see good, well colored/shaded bases that someone took from someone else.
You can do it for fun if you want, even I'm guilty of that. But it isn't a thing that I'd show off to anyone.
Learn to draw by drawing what you see. It's harder, yes, but it feels much better.

i figured since you were disagreeing with me on the same thread, you read the other comments which is usually a good idea if you plan to jump in. stops people having to repeat themselves.
i dont even know where this specific mention of tracing even came from since this submission is a base, which is intended to be draw on.
either way, to you and everyone else, the point is that you can "disagree" until the cows come home but we do art that makes us happy and its not fair for us to try and take someone elses happiness away from them simply because we think its less creative or doesnt meet our personal standards or values of what makes an artist.
If they have permission then leave them alone, no one cares if you are against it. If they're trying to steal art or draw over screenshots and claim it by all means go have a bitch, but dont butt in on people and tell them how they are allowed to learn or enjoy themselves.
