Gamut Mask Tool For Photoshop by smilinweapon Gamut Mask Tool For Photoshop by smilinweapon
(Warning: Big File!)
I want to share with you this PSD I made after reading Color and Light by James Gurney. If you have read the book you already know what this is all about and why it is so important. If you haven't and you are struggling with picking good colors for your paintings, I highly recommend you spend a few minutes checking out the links I put at the bottom of this page. Special thanks to [link] for helping me make this. :) If for any reason you are confused on how to use this PSD. Send me a note or message me on Facebook.

And to think I just made a color wheel a week or two ago. This one is much better, and it has gamut masking!
So wonderful, thank you very much. :D

To put it simply, if you've looked at a good painting, it doesn't use every single color of the color wheel. And in color theory, you can use a very unsaturated color but make it look saturated nonetheless. Gamut mapping allows you to limit your colors so you can master them in this sense.

This is a psd file so you have to open it in photoshop. It gives you a color wheel with masks that you can turn on and off. The point is to use colors within the geometrical shape(s) with the color picker. Color is probably one of the hardest subject in the fundamentals of art, so don't worry if you don't get it right very soon. Just remember to experiment and look at life or master paintings. And don't forget that it should be something fun and not a tedious task.

A very useful tool, i've made one by myself and it improved a lot my knowledge of colors, since saturation (or better, chroma) it's sometimes hard to consider! But i feel better with the YRMBCG wheel (with cyan and magenta) , give it a try, it adds more bright hues, i think! :)
